Movies Coming in 2024 – Part Two

The second (First part is HERE) half of this list must be taken with a pinch of salt. Right now, given the state of Hollywood movies, there’s a fairly high chance that more than a few of these films won’t actually hit theaters in 2024, if they’re more than six months away. But we can only work with the information at hand. A lot of the smaller or direct to streaming releases won’t even be announced at this point, so this will mainly be the big Hollywood releases listed in this part. Since it’s a shorter list I’m just going to go month by month on this one. But first here is the the full list:

July

As we head to the school holidays we get the definitely-not-a-reboot of Twister, “Twisters“, which is being heavily marketed as an “update” to the original film, but doesn’t have the same plot or share any characters with the original. I’m pretty sure that is literally what a reboot is (As opposed to a remake or sequel), but they are very insistent on this one. Go figure, I can’t say I have any interest in this one, but then I wasn’t much of a fan of the original either. This is probably a flop. One movie likely to be a big hit though is “Despicable Me 4“, there’s no indication that the Minions franchise has stopped being a licence to print money, but it wouldn’t shock me if this doesn’t quite hit as high as previous ones. The third installment dropped significantly domestically but more than made up for it with it’s global appeal. It is highly unlikely for this to flop, but whether the franchise can still regularly crack a billion remains to be seen.

Capping off July is the biggest superhero movie of the year, “Deadpool 3“, featuring a full crossover with the Fox X-Men universe and possibly some kind of tie in to the MCU. Most importantly we finally get to see Wade and Logan side by side and played by the actors that made those roles their own, Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds. This will be a big test of superhero fatigue, if this one can’t get close to the billion dollar mark, it may well be over for the genre. It’s worth noting neither of the previous Deadpool movies reached that point, but they didn’t have Wolverine in the mix too. If this came out 4 years ago it would be a dead cert. Now? Who knows. What I do know is I’m almost certainly going to be watching this one.

August

August is a busier month for cinemas, but may end as a month of major flops. At the weaker end of the superhero scale is “Kraven the Hunter“, a movie that seems to have turned the fan favourite Spider-Man villain into a completely different Marvel character, specifically “Ka-Zar”. To be fair Sony probably doesn’t have the rights to Ka-Zar even though he has crossed paths with Spider-Man, but it seems a foolish move to turn such a bad-ass Spidey villain into a empathetic do-gooder. Then again the end goal of the Venomverse seems to be to create Sony’s own “Avengers” film out of Spider-Man villains in a universe without Spider-Man. This movie, like that plan sounds doomed to fail.

August also sees the return of the Aliens franchise with “Alien: Romulus“. Now under Disney control, this franchise is unlikely to go in the direction long term fans would like. My suspicion is we will see something similar to “Prey”, basically duplicating as much as possible from the original movie (Or more likely “Aliens” in this instance) and upping the “diversity” level. The end result will be pointless, vastly inferior, but maybe not awful and so coast on people going “Well it’s not as bad as Covenant” to sell it. Your alternative viewing for mid august though is the second part of Kevin Costner’s epicly long Western “Horizon: An American Saga“, which is unlikely to steal too much of Romulus’ box office. Not because of quality, more just because it’s the second half of a movie and likely 3+ hours long. Definite counter programming there.

The Next Big Thing?

Eli Roth’s “Borderlands” is a movie that may end up one of this years success stories, providing it can convince fans of the game to watch instead of play. I’m only vaguely aware of this game, but it’s clear they’ve been very specific in which characters they’ve chosen to use and which ones to leave out. Fan favourites “Doctor Zed”, “Brick” and “Mordecai” are all absent. Not only that but they cast little Kevin Hart as big tough mercenary “Roland”. If you look up the missing characters and the ones they are focusing on you start to see a theme. Basically they’ve taken a fairly well balanced set of game characters and trimmed it until it basically looks like every other big fantasy/sci-fi franchise of the modern day. That’s all I will say on that. The question is though will any of that matter or will game fans just buy tickets anyway? Many think video game adaptations are the new Superhero movie. We will see I guess!

On the darker side of things though we have a couple of potentially interesting movies. First of all M. Night Shyamalan’s latest from his deal with Warner Brothers, which is a psychological thriller called “Trap” set over one night at a music concert. Shyamalan is consistently inconsistent so that one could go either way. One thing I can say for him though is his films always have interesting premises even if they don’t always live up to their promise. On the horror side of things though is the psychological horror “Speak No Evil“, which is set to test just how long a polite Danish couple can maintain their composure when confronted with madness. Neither of these films are likely to rake it in, but they’ll probably make money.

September

As the kids return to school we get the movie I am probably looking forward to the most in 2024, “Beetlejuice 2″. Of course, whenever a franchise I am particularly fond of makes a sudden return, I balance my excitement with more than a little anxiety. Hopefully it’ll all work out okay. Burton, Keaton and Ryder are all back and they are joined by a cast that includes the great talents of Jenna Ortega (Playing Winona’s daughter) and Willem Dafoe (In an unknown role). Another thing we haven’t seen since the 80’s is a theatrical release of an animated Transformers movie, the first since the franchises theatrical debut in 1986. Can’t say they’ve done a great job of marketing “Transformers One” by declaring it the franchises first animated feature. I mean nothing sells your knowledge of Transformers like forgetting that “Transformers: The Movie” exists.

Joining the list of franchise returns is the tenth entry in the Saw franchise. I haven’t seen any of the more recent entries so I can’t speak too much on where the franchise has been going creatively, but certainly it still seems to bring in a solid box office. I expect this one to make money, though it remains to be seen how much more they can squeeze out of this franchise. There is at least one movie in September that is an original and that is Brad Pitt and George Clooney’s “Wolfs“. A story about two lone wolf fixers assigned to the same job (Which is probably why it is not called “Wolves”). This one is directed by Jon Watts, the man behind the MCU Spider-Man movies. I suspect this will be a decent movie, though I couldn’t guess on its box office.

October

Heading in to my favourite month of the year we get my second most anticipated movie of 2024, “Joker: Folie à Deux“. A lot of people have cast doubt on this one due it it being apparently a musical, yet a lot of people also doubted the first movie (Myself included), until we started getting trailers and then slowly we realized we may have something truly special. That first movie was heavily influenced by the Scorsese films “Taxi Driver” (1976) and “King of Comedy” (1982). Scorsese made a couple of films in between those that I think may give us a clue to where things are heading with this new movie, namely: “New York, New York” (1977) and “Raging Bull” (1980). The former is a musical, but both movies are largely centered around a volatile romantic relationship and this movie is of course introducing us to Harley Quinn (Played by Lady Gaga).

Obviously October means horror so it’s no surprise to see two of the most successful new horrors of recent years make their return with “Smile 2” and “Terrifier 3“. Whether either of these can live up to their previous installments remains to be seen but I have no doubt they’ll both make a killing at the box office (Excuse the pun). Joining those though is Leigh Wanell and Blumhouses latest Universal Horror classic, “The Wolf Man“. Wanell did a great job with his “Invisible Man” reboot and his own “Upgrade” so I am cautiously optimistic about this one. With luck I’ll be able to factor all three of these movies into my October Horrorthon reviews for 2024.

November

As he head towards the end of 2024 we are very much in “Likely to be postponed” territory. But as of the writing of this article, November is slated to present us with the final superhero movie of the year in “Venom 3“. We’re yet to get a trailer for this or any real information about it so I’m hesitant to make any kind of prediction. The first two Venom movies were reasonable enough and fairly popular however coming after two likely clangers in this strange shared universe and with superhero fatigue in full force, this could end up a flop too. Because of this it is even more likely to be pushed into 2025.

The second movie with a huge question mark over it is Ridley Scotts “Gladiator 2“. Which supposedly follows Maximus’ son (Played by the relatively unknown Paul Mescal). While Scott is a great director his output in recent years has been very inconsistent. Again this is one of the more likely movies to get delayed and I can’t make any predictions. November does see a couple of original films that may be worth checking out, first up is “The Amateur“, a thriller from “Slow Horses” James Hawk featuring the talents of Remi Malek. That is followed by a new De Niro gangster movie “Wise Guys“. I don’t know much about either but that casting alone is a big selling point.

December

At last we reach the end of the year, and naturally, anything scheduled for release in December has a good chance of being delayed until the next year. However, first up is the movie, “The Lord of the Rings: The War of Rohirrim,” already delayed from 2022. This is an animated feature, and I believe it is set in the Peter Jackson LOTR’s universe, though, since it is set two and a half centuries before those films, I wouldn’t expect a whole lot of crossover. The story is based on the appendices of the original novels, which means they have a lot of freedom in the specifics. That makes the quality hard to judge because I think we all know how badly Amazon’s LOTR’s TV series ended up. Hopefully Warner can do better than Amazon.

December features three big franchise movies due for release including a mysterious Karate Kid sequel (Title as of yet unconfirmed). It’s unknown if it will fit in with the excellent Cobra Kai TV series or be it’s own thing, but it stars both Ralph Machio and Jackie Chan who took on the Mr. Miyagi type roll in the rather strange remake from 2010. Jackie is of course Chinese and not Japanese and as such uses Kung Fu and not Karate, which always made the remake movie ridiculous. Hopefully the film will address the different fighting styles, but we will see. Following this Disney has it’s latest frachise spin off movie “Mufasa: The Lion King“. Released alongside that and providing obvious competition is “Sonic 3” from Paramount. These films have been good and well received so my money is on the blue guy winning that fight.

A Strange Christmas Present

Last but not least though is another movie I’m looking forward to and that is “Nosferatu” from Robert Eggers. The movie stars Bill Skarsgård as Count Orlok, and features the talents of Willem DaFoe and Nicholas Hoult. The director is the main point of interest though on this one because I can’t think of anyone more appropriate to helm this particular remake. Eggers of course gave us “Witch”, “The Lighthouse” and “The Northman”. His focus on historical accuracy and blending fantasy with reality in a way that leaves a great deal of ambiguity should give us a refreshing take on this remake of a movie that is now 103 years old. While I am certain it will be good, it’s hard to say if it will make money. As good as The Northman was, it flopped in theatres and I’m not sure Christmas Day is the best date for a horror movies release!

So that’s it for 2024. Chances are this later period will have a lot of movies that are just not on anyone’s radar just yet. It’s also worth noting the best movie of last year (In my humble opinion) was Godzilla Minus One, a Japanese movie I didn’t even know was on the cards at the start of the year. So expect one or two surprises. Hollywood has a fairly light card this year due to the impact of last years writers strike. That gives independent and foreign language movies a huge opportunity to showcase themselves, we will see what they do with that opportunity.

Thanks for reading.

Upcoming Movies in 2024 – Part 1 (January to June)

With the 2023 wrap up out of the way, it’s time to take a look at what movies are coming to our screens in 2024. I’m doing this in two halves, so this is just the first six months. It’s worth noting that several of the big names were actually due out in 2023 but got pushed back due to the various strikes. Dune: Part Two for example was a movie a lot of people were excited for in 2023, but it got pushed back, unnecessarily in my view, due to the strikes. Specifically they wanted the actors available to promote it. These days it’s debatable if the actors actually help or hinder a movies promotion given their tendency to make divisive comments in interviews. Then again, the last Dune movie didn’t perform that well despite meeting audience approval so I understand them not wanting to take the risk.

It’s also worth noting how few superhero movies are hitting the screens this coming year and neither the MCU nor DCU/DCEU have an official entry this year. The DCEU is dead now and James Gunn’s DCU doesn’t launch until 2025. Marvel meanwhile only have MCU adjacent content with their revival of the Fox X-Men universe via Deadpool 3 and three more entries in Sony’s more miss than hit “Venomverse”. This is probably for the best, given the disastrous box office both franchises have had in 2023. It remains to be seen if this little break will help the recent decline in the popularity of superhero movies or hasten it. Disney are putting out two MCU shows next year mind, but I doubt “Echo” or “Eyes of Wakanda” will help much.

First Quarter.

The first few months of 2024 offers several highly anticipated movies, several of which were originally slated for 2023. I’ll start off with a list and then break it down by month. Note, a lot of the movies I’m listing here aren’t big Hollywood Blockbusters. With the writers strike, the major studios took a big hit and as a result have less than normal to bring out. However, often the best movies aren’t from the major studios, so I’ve included a lot of smaller films I think have potential. Some of them aren’t even horrors!

Note: I’m updating this list with review scores as I watch stuff!

January.

First up is the Blumhouse horror Night Swim (Which will be already out by the time I post this), this is a movie that was originally due out in 2023 but got postponed. The movie itself looks so so, but it does mark the new partnership between James Wan and Jason Blum who merged their companies on January 2nd this year. This will create a real powerhouse for horror in the coming years especially considering their partnership with Universal. Later in the month Jason Statham’s launches us firmly into 2024 in solid style with the fun looking action movie “The Beekeeper“. It’s classic Jason Statham, if you hate those movies you can probably skip it but if you enjoy them you can expect to be in safe hands.

There’s quite a few lower profile movies for January too that look interesting. Those after low budget horror fun though should check out the trailer for “Destroy all Neighbors“, which looks like “Psycho Goreman” levels of fun with more than a hint of Alex Winter’s “Freaked” (And not just because Winter is in this too). Another interesting one for January is the comedy “Self Reliance” which looks to subvert “Hunting Humans/Running Man” trope. This has been done a few times now (For example the excellent “Guns Akimbo”), but the trailer looked fun and they seem to have found a new angle to it.

Finishing up the line up is a couple of action films in “The Bricklayer” and “Wanted Man” and the science fiction triller “I.S.S.”. The Bricklayer (Which is already out), looks pretty good from the trailer and is from seasoned action director Renny Harlin (Cliffhanger, Die Hard II, Long Kiss goodnight). Wanted Man is directed by and starring Dolph Lundgren. Dolph has directed a few action films now and all hover between 5-6/10 on imdb, so don’t expect too much. I.S.S. meanwhile is a sci-fi/thriller based on the idea of what would happen on the International Space Station should nuclear war between Russia and the US kick off on Earth.

February.

February sees our first Superhero film for 2023 and…. yeah, it doesn’t look good. “Madame Web” appears to be Sony scrapping the very bottom of the barrel of the characters they have available. Traditionally Madame Web is an elderly blind woman in a wheelchair that helps guide Peter Parker. I’ve never been a big fan of creating a “Spider-Family” when one of the things that made Peter Parker Spider-Man was having to solve his issues by himself. Madame Web at least was always very hands off, effectively just a quest giver. But it’s still just a gimmick hanger on character and not the kind you would make a movie for. This character is joined by three more Spider-Knockoffs, the only one I care about at all is Julia Carpenter, since she debuted it “Secret Wars” back in the 80’s, when I was heavily reading Marvel Comics.

On a potentially positive note we finally get the Henry Cavill spy thriller “Argylle“, though a word of caution on that one: I’m pretty sure that is a bait and switch. The trailer only shows Cavill playing an in world, fictional version of the character and as the trailer reaches the point of introducing the “Real” Argylle…. it ends. Yeah, it’s totally not going to be Henry. My guess is that the author of the fictional in world books that is central to the story is the real Argylle, in what would effectively turn the story into a “Long Kiss Goodnight” remake. This may or may not cause a backlash depending on if the movie is actually any good! Fortunately the trailer did look action packed and fun, so regardless of who the real Argylle is, it may be entertaining.

Filling out the rest of February are some real wild cards. Probably the most notable is Ethan Coen’s “Drive Away Dolls“. The trailer looked stylish but I honestly couldn’t tell much else about it. Then there’s the action movie “Land of Bad“, which looks like a typical soldiers in action type movie but those can sometimes be very good, so we’ll see. Finally, there is another comedy horror, “Lisa Frankenstein“, the plot is somewhat similar in basic concept to horror cult classic “May”, but with the comedy dial turned up to eleven. Lisa, like may is trying to construct her perfect man, but this time she starts with a re-animated corpse and is basically trying to replace bits of it to make it less… dead. Not sure if it will work in practice, but concepts like this are always a fine line between hilarious and terrible.

March.

March is where things really get interesting in 2024, with a number of highly anticipated movies. This includes the delayed “Dune Part II” finishing off Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s first Dune novel. The trailer for this looks superb and it may be the safest bet of the year for quality. The month also sees a fourth Kung Fu Panda movie, but more interesting for me is “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire“, the fourth canonical Ghostbusters movie and direct sequel to “Afterlife”. The movie sees the franchise return to New York and there is more than a chill in the air. The remaining OG-Busters return once more, though it is unknown how large their roles are this time. My guess is you won’t see much of Venkman in this.

We also get a reboot of “The Fall Guy“, an 80’s TV series now turned into a movie. There seems to be little in common between this movie and the series, but the trailer did look pretty good. Perhaps this will be the new “Equalizer”. A potential movie to look out for in March is Bong Joon-ho’s science fiction adaptation “Mickey 17“. I don’t know the source material (The novel “Mickey7”), but the synopsis sounds interesting and this is an Oscar winning director with a strong list of science fiction and horror movies to his name. The very capable Robert Pattinson takes the lead roll in the movie, so there is a lot of potential. Capping off March is a pair of trope subersions with Netflix’s take on the fairy tale movie “Damsel” and the imaginary friends gone bad horror “Imaginary”. The latter of those is the first of two movies about imaginary friends this year.

Second Quarter.

The second quarter of 2024 features a run of big budget action based movies and a fair amount of horror along with a lot of franchise returns. In all (Of the movies listed), nine are either franchise sequels, prequels, spin-offs or reboots and only six are original films, four of which are horrors. Here’s the list:

April
NEW ADDITION: Monkey Man (Action) – April 5th
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire – April 12 (Action/Kaiju)
The First Omen – April 12 (Horror)
Abducting Abigail – April 19 (Horror)
NEW ADDITION: The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare – April 19th (Action)
Civil War – April 26 (Action/Thriller)

May
Horrorscope – May 10 (Horror)
If – May 17 (Horror
Furiosa – May 24, 2024
Garfield – May 24, 2024
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes – May 24, 2024

June
The Watchers – June 7, 2024 (Horror)
Ballerina – June 7
Bad Boys 4 – Jun 14
Inside Out 2 – June 14, 2024
A Quiet Place: Day One – June 28
Horizon: An American Saga (Pt 1) – June 28

April

Already controversial film “Civil War” hit’s theatres April 26th. Hard not to feel that movie is cynically cashing in on extreme tensions across the US in what is sure to be the most controversial election of all time. Fortunately even in the trailer they make it clear the film is pure fantasy since it has California teaming up with Texas! April also gives us a new entry in the “Monsterverse” franchise, “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” this time it’s a full on Godzilla and King Kong team up movie and it remains to be seen if they can actually make this work. Certainly the scene of Godzilla running in the trailer was… strange. After the success of the Japanese Godzilla Minus One in 2023, it’s uncertain whether the audiences are still on board with a heroic running Godzilla teaming up with a heroic Kong.

For horror we have an ill advised old franchise prequel “The First Omen“, which just to be a little more confusing is a prequel to the reboot Omen film from 2006 and not the one from 1976. yes they made a prequel to the film that has a 5.5 (62k votes) on imdb rather than the one with a 7.5 (129k votes). Go figure. Though a prequel to the ’76 film would basically just be Rosemary’s baby. All feels a bit pointless to me, but maybe it’ll be a surprise hit. April also sees the release of Universal monster thriller “Abducting Abigail“, a movie little seems to be known about, but seems to be about people kidnapping someone that is actually a monster.

UPDATE: Two new movies have been added to the slate in April that are worth mentioning, both are action films. First is “Monkey Man” from Universal, released April 5th and from the looks of the excellent trailer is a action film/superhero origin movie. That is followed by Guy Ritchies latest movie “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare” with Henry Cavill. Ritchies output last year was nothing short of spectacular so I expect good things here as well. It seems April just got kicked up a notch!

May

May brings more questionable sequels with the first Mad Max film without Mad Max in: “Furiosa“. It’s also the first Max franchise movie to feature extremely heavy CGI and it was very noticeable in the trailer (And not in a good way). One sequel that actually looks decent though is “Kingdom of the Planet of the Ape“. Honestly it could go either way, but the trailer was promising. May also brings “The Strangers: Chapter 1“, a prequel to a home invasion film I wasn’t particularly impressed with. In my review of “The Strangers” the only positive I had about it was a surprisingly good performance by Liv Tyler. Another horror out in May is the deliberately misspelled “Horrorscope” about people having their fortunes read and then dying in related ways to that fortune. Straight forward gimmick; we’ll see how it lands.

May sees Garfield back on the big screen, now with Chris Pratt voicing the lasagna loving feline. The new film is called “The Garfield Movie” not to be confused with “Garfield: The Movie” from 2004. June also features a potentially big animated feature with “Inside Out 2“, though Disney doesn’t have the best track record with animation in recent years, so remains to be seen if it will be as much of a success as the original film. Disney can’t claim genre fatigue on their animation since everyone else seems to be doing well in that department. One movie that I think may be a hit this year (One of two for Ryan Reynolds), is “IF“, this years second movie about imaginary friends. These are good imaginary friends though, so don’t expect them to murder anyone. This is pure fantasy/comedy and the trailer looked great.

June

As we roll into the summer we get a pair of franchise action movies with the fourth installment of Michael Bay’s Bad Boys franchise “Bad Boys 4“. Not much is known about that one right now, so there is a chance it’ll get delayed. Before that though we get “Ballerina” a John Wick spin off set between the third and fourth movie of that franchise. The movie does include Keanu Reeves reprising his role, but the actual lead is Ana de Armas. It’s unknown how much of a role Wick will have in it. The third movie vying to be an early summer hit is Pixar’s “Inside Out 2“. While the original was a big hit, we all know how things are going for Disney right now and this isn’t Toy Story. It seems unlike “Anxiety” will be as popular a character as “Joy” was.

On the horror side of things June brings “The Watchers“, the directorial debut of Ishana Shyamalan, M. Night’s daughter. Hopefully she isn’t also obsessed with building movies around a single twist. The big horror movie of June though is the Quiet Place prequel “A Quiet Place: Day One“. If you read my review of the previous movie you’ll know I really liked the prequel section and was indifferent to the rest, so I’m actually on board with this one. Stepping away from horror, the final movie of note in June is Kevin Costner’s latest Western Epic “Horizon: An American Saga“. This is a self funded two part movie with the second due out in august. The total run time is apparently eleven hours, though it was originally meant to be four movies and seems to now be just two. The final length remains to be seen… But probably not by me!

End of Part One

Part two launches right into the summer holiday season and beyond. Right now its pretty barren terrain thanks to last years writers strike. They delayed a lot of films due out last year to make sure they had some content, but that could only stretch it so far. Also the end half of the year is where films are more likely to be delayed again, so it is a lot more speculative. Suffice to say part two will be shorter! Anyway, thanks for reading and I hope it’s given you a few films to look forward to.

2023 – Overview Of Upcoming Releases

While 2022 may have been a poor year for the box office and feature an abundance of bad movies, you can see from my top ten it wasn’t totally devoid of quality. The truth is though only the top five was something special and the rest was just above average movies that wouldn’t bother a top ten list prior to around 2016. So does the outlook seem any better for 2023? Let’s have a look, genre by genre.

AI Generated, so don’t bother trying to figure out what the movies are.

Horror

There are a LOT of franchise movies coming in 2023 in the horror market and I can’t say I’m excited for any of them. These include Scream, Evil Dead (reboot), The Nun, The Exorcist (reboot), Saw, Salem’s Lot (reboot), The Meg, Insidious and The Strangers (A reboot of a movie not even 20 years old, that I slammed in my first October Horrathon in 2021). None of these have me excited and none of them will get me in the theatre but I will no doubt watch them all once they are on streaming. A more interesting one though, which could also be a total disaster is the possibility of a “Gremlins 3” movie around Christmas time. There is no trailer and few details so hard to say if it’ll even make that date.

How has it taken so long for someone to use this name for a horror story?

There’s a couple of very loose sounding adaptations in the works too. One for Michael Gilio’s “Dark Harvest” and one for Stephen King’s “The Boogeyman“. However, both have synopsis’ that sound radically different from the story in the book. The Boogeyman especially sounds like a totally different film with the title slapped on top, something that always used to happen with King’s books and I guess what was old is now new. Dark Harvest meanwhile has switched the focus from the monster as the hero to two kids (A boy and a girl) that want to share the prize.

It’s worth noting both of these were male focused stories (Only boys can take part in the competition in Dark Harvest in the book and The boogeyman’s story is focused on two men in a room), so it sounds like have been re-written for modern Hollywood to make them more female focused. We’ll see if “Dark Harvest” still has anything to offer (the shift away from the monster as lead is the real issue here), but I don’t hold a lot of hope for “The Boogeyman” given how little it has in common with the original story.

Another horror with a creative marketing campaign. This time sending AI’s to stalk people on social media. Creepy!

Four of the higher profile original movies “M3gan” and “Knock at the Cabin” , “The Pope’s Exorcist” and “There’s Something Wrong With The Children” seem at least on the surface to feature heavily familiar tropes and not especially original stories. That said though they all have potential and perhaps even enough to get me to see them in the cinema, especially M3gan and Knock at the Cabin.

Speaking of familiar tropes 2023 also features two new Dracula movies each with their own specific take on the tale. One with Nick Cage focusing on (and named after) “Renfield“, Dracula’s insane minion and the other “Last Voyage of the Demeter” based on his voyage to England from Transylvania. While I probably wouldn’t bother with yet another Dracula film, Nick Cage has been on fire lately and both these films have interesting angles on the story. I will at least be keen to see a trailer.

Alexander Skarsgård may not be box office gold, but he certainly picks interesting movies!

Perhaps the most original looking horror movie in 2023 though appears to be the Brandon Cronenberg directed Alexander Skarsgård movie “Infinity Pool“. The movie sounds like a lot of crazy weirdness and who doesn’t love crazy weirdness? The trailer certainly looks interesting and it seems the apple may not have fallen too far from the Cronenberg tree (Yes, he is David’s son) because if I didn’t know better I’d think this was one of his father’s films. Oh, almost forgot, out very soon is the fun looking horror comedy “Cocaine Bear” likely to get Elizabeth Banks back in peoples good books.

The most generic looing action movie posters ever.

Action

Like most recent years the action scene has been dominated by franchise movies and 2023 looks to be no different. Some are the usual cynical cash ins but there are a few that are worth keeping an eye on. Top of that list would be “Mission Impossible – Dead Reckoning – Part One“, this is the big finale to the entire franchise and while it will probably get a reboot (Let’s remember this started as a TV series before Cruise rebooted it to the big screen) that will be the end of Cruises run with the iconic franchise. At some point he will just be too old to do his own stunts and it seems he wants to bow out of the franchise while he still can. No idea if the story will be good, but expect something spectacular in the stunt department.

May even have a plot this time, but let’s face it, if the action is as good as the last three we won’t mind either way.

Another sequel that will have a lot of people excited is John Wick: Chapter 4. While the writing quality has dropped since the first movie the sequels continued to deliver spectacular fight scenes and solid pulp style entertainment. With things heading towards an end game for the franchise Chapter 4 promises a step forward with the world building and story, while continuing the trend of high octane action. Not wanting to be left out of the sequel game though is Netflix who are planning to release “Extraction 2” at some point in the year. I haven’t watched the first one, so can’t say if that is worth being excited over.

Ewar Woowar would be proud, even if someone stole all the D’s from his name.

A couple of unexpected action film returns that may also prove to be solid entertainment are “The Expendables 4” and “The Equalizer 3“. But with Denzel now 68 and Sly 76 these certainly represent a challenge in believability. I am fairly confident in the Equalizer after the first two movies, but the Expendables 3 was a bit of a clanger so the fourth movie could go either way and for an action star 76 is a lot harder to sell. Obviously Sly will bring in some new blood, but that was part of where the third movie fell apart so fingers crossed he can find the right balance this time.

No, I don’t care either.

At the “Why did they bother” end of the returning franchise scale is the tenth main Fast and Furious movie. I’ve still never watched a single one, but I don’t really feel I’ve been missing out. At some point I’ll remedy that but for now I just have no interest in “Fast X“. While I may be indifferent to that franchise, one that I am very actively dreading is “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” where an 80 year old Harrison Ford is forced to don the hat and whip one more time just so Disney can milk a few extra dollars out of the franchise and probably try and pass the torch on, like anyone one else can possibly fill that role. Something they already tried and failed to do years ago with the poorly received fourth film.

What year ending in a number is complete without Guy Ritchie making a movie with Jason Statham?

So that’s the franchise films, but what about the rest? There are a few interesting ones here, so let’s start off with Guy Ritchie’s two entries into 2023. First up is “Operation Fortune: Ruse de guerre“, which teams Ritchie back up with his regular star Jason Statham and from the looks of it may be the start of a new Statham action franchise. Does he really need another one? Probably not, but lets face it they are always, especially when Ritchie is involved so let’s just roll with it.

The second Ritchie movie, “The Covenant” is a bit more out there with the setting switched to Afghanistan and featuring the bravery of an Afghan interpreter attempting to carry an injured army sergeant (Played by Jake Gyllenhaal) across hostile terrain. Ritchie doesn’t always do well outside his comfort zone so that one could go either way.

The real mystery is who wrote the book and why did Apple pay so much for it before it was even released?

Of the rest of the action slate three in particular stand out for me. The first is the Apple Original “Argylle” featuring Henry Cavill as a superspy. There is however very little to go on with this one, the teaser just shows him dancing with his co-star and while it is based on a book, the film was greenlit before the book was released, the author doesn’t appear to actually exist (Suggesting it’s a pen name for someone more famous) and I can find no reviews or useful information about the plot of it.

The best information I have suggests a sort of “Last Kiss Goodnight” kind of story where Cavill stars off unaware that he is actually a superspy and has to be woken up to it by another field agent (possibly Catherine O’Hara or Bryce Dallas Howard’s characters in the film). The movie is planned as a trilogy so if Cavill doesn’t get the Bond gig, he may have a spy franchise anyway.

A movie about Gran Turismo doesn’t sound that interesting but add in Neil Blomkamp and you have my attention.

The next movie of note for me is Neil Blomkamp’s return, with the movie “Gran Turismo“. Named after the video game and about a champion player that became a real life race driver. This is on the lighter end of the action genre and a long way from what you expect from Blomkamp, so it’s a definite wildcard but it’s certainly going to be interesting. Last on my list to watch is the Nick Cage western The Old Way. The plot seems about as classic a Western tale of revenge and redemption. Not particularly original but Cage has been on form in recent years and I can’t wait to see how this turns out.

Along with these the movie will also see a new action moviess from some of the usual names in the genre including Dwayne Johnson with “Red One“, Gerard Butler with “Plane” and Tom Hardy with “Havoc“. The later two have interesting enough plot synopsis but couldn’t guess on quality from them and The Rock’s entry has no plot information released yet.

I’m not saying the market is oversaturated but even the AI drew like double the number of posters for Superhero movies than any other genre.

Superhero

Well…it can’t possibly be worse than 2022’s Superhero slate turned out right? Not that I would have predicted a Batman movie that fell apart in the final act or a Thor movie that draws comparisons with “Batman and Robin”. “Black Adam” turned out the most enjoyable of Superhero film of last year, but was still a flawed beast so can we do better this year? I’m going to break down this one in the order of what I think most likely to be the better movies.

Potentially the last good MCU movie, so enjoy it while you can!

Top of the pile is almost certainly going to be Guardians of the Galaxy vol.3. While some weren’t keen on the second movie, most enjoyed it and everyone seems to universally like the first. This is the teams final outing and will no doubt be an emotional journey as well as a fun one. It’s almost certain at least one of the team will be dying here, so bring your hankies. This is also the only Superhero movie of the year likely to break the billion dollar mark.

That’s it for the sure things. The next few on my list are more in the “Could go either way” territory. Starting with the most obscure character out this year “Blue Beetle“. The protagonist for this movie is Xolo Maridueña, a name that doesn’t likely ring a bell but if you are a fan of Cobra Kai (And really, you should be) you’ll recognise him as Miguel from that show. He did such a good job in Cobra Kai I am certainly rooting for him bring this relatively unknown DC character into the limelight. Sadly though however it turns out chances area this is a one off as it is technically a part of the old DCEU universe and not James Gunn’s new DCU.

Zachery Levi has my respect, so I really want this to be good, but I fear the worst.

Coming in off a rather poor looking trailer is “Shazam! Fury of the Gods“. This is a tricky one because the trailer for the first film didn’t totally sell it either and yet it turned out to be surprisingly good. It helps that Zachery Levi is very good as the character, but can he surprise people twice in a row? Again though, he is part of the old DCEU so expect this to be his final appearance.

Following on from that is the long delayed “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom“. This is likely an editing mess due to all the scrapped plans and Amber Heard controversy. Michael Keaton shot scenes for the film, but isn’t in it. Ben Affleck may or may not be in it. Basically it’s a mess, but the previous movie did well so who knows. What is certain is Momoa is done in the role after this, but will be back in the new DCU likely in the role he was born to play – Lobo and that is a movie I am really looking forward to!

Ant Man and The Wasp and Old Wasp and Young Wasp and Kang the miniature and Bill Murray for some reason.

Next in the “Either way” category is “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania“. This movie looks like a mess that exists to drive forward the larger story of MCU phase 5. As fun as Paul Rudd was in the role, his part has was diluted in the last movie and looks to be diluted even further here. On top of that the entire movie seems to be CGI, which means it will be expensive and largely look like a video game. Odds are this won’t be that good, but there is a strong cast so perhaps if the movie is character driven there willb e something to enjoy in it.

Let’s be honest, people will watch this movie for Keaton’s return as Batman. No one cares about Ezra Miller as The Flash.

Speaking of movies that look like a mess, the potential disaster that now looks to be the final entry in the old DCEU is “The Flash“. Much like the rest of the DCEU, it brings an idea to the table long after Marvel has already exhausted it, in this instance it is the multiverse. An idea that has potential for sure but after Spider-Man did it and Doctor Strange sort of did it and after the CW did it in their DC TV shows it has far less value as a gimmick. People will be excited to see the Michael Keaton cameo and perhaps that will make the whole exercise worthwhile but it’s hard to get over the sad fact that Ezra Miller is both an abysmal Flash and not a very nice person.

Kraven the animal rights protector

Over to Sony next to see if they can bring out something even more meme-able than 2022’s Morbius. Honestly this is entirely possible for their “Kraven the Hunter” movie seeing as it appears they have gone the route of making Kraven the Hunter an environmental activist motivated by protecting endangered species. All very noble but doesn’t really fit a character known as “The Hunter” famous for hunting dangerous animals (and people) for sport. Indeed it’s sort of bizarre. Kraven may actually be the best Spider-Man villain never seen in a movie, so I’m not going to totally rule it out as potentially good, but the odds are against it. Especially with how they botched Morbius.

Now for the almost certain dumpster fires. I’m not even going to dwell on these but fighting it out for worst superhero movies of the year are likely going to be franchise killer Seth Rogen’s attempt with “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” and the movie no one asked for “The Marvels”.

Is it just me or does the top left movie look like Lucasfilm made a film about the life of Owen Lars?

Science Fiction

Not the biggest year for Science fiction in 2023, but there what it lacks in quantity it may make up for in quality. We have potentially four franchise movies and a couple of original movies of note. The biggest movie of the year though, maybe in general and not just in science fiction is the second part of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune series. Simply called “Dune: Part Two”. This is the conclusion of the story of the first book (and the story depicted in David Lynch’s version in the 80’s). This has a whole lot more going on than the first half of the story and could be a truly awe inspiring movie. Probably something you want to see in IMAX.

Well, it’ll probably be better than the later Bay movies anyway.

2023 also sees a new Transformers film in “Rise of the Beasts“, which seems to be vaguely a sequel to Bumblebee and a prequel to the Michael Bay movies but not really committed to either. Like Bumblebee it looks like they have made an effort to make the characters look more like the toys but I haven’t seen much evidence of quality outside of that.

Joining Transformers in making a return is Ghostbusters, But with a December release date tentatively scheduled for the Afterlife sequel, few details and no teaser it remains to be seen if it will make it out before 2024. Hopefully we’ll get some details in the new year. The final franchise movie returning in the genre is The Hunger Games with it’s prequel movie no one asked for “Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes“. The movie follows the rise of the main series antagonist. Maybe it will be a surprise, but I doubt it’ll be a hit.

Why they didn’t just do a Turok movie I don’t know.

The two original movies that have caught my attention for 2023 are the Spacemen Vs Dinosaur movie “65” with Adam Driver. The idea is obviously a bit of a novelty but the trailer looked good and Adam Driver is a decent actor so definitely worth checking out. Another film due out early in 2023 is Universal Pictures “Distant“, which seems to be a space disaster movie (along the lines of “Oxygen” or “The Martian”). I’ve not seen a trailer and there doesn’t seem to be one which is odd for a movie due out in January, which does not bode terribly well.

Is it just me or do these all look like book covers?

Fantasy

Very little to talk about in the fantasy area and only one that involves traditional sword and sorcery fantasy. That would be the second attempt at a “Dungeons and Dragons” move. The first attempt back in 2000 was a total disaster, but the trailer for this at least looks entertaining. The table-top game is probably more popular now than it was in 2000 (Largely thanks to Stranger Things) so I imagine it’ll do reasonably well in the cinema. Hopefully it’ll be worth the price of admission!

Timothee Chalamet to take on Sand Worms and Oompa-Loompa in 2023

A movie that may turn out to be a surprise family hit is “Wonka“. On the surface a Chocolate Factory prequel may not sound like much but with Paul King, director of both Paddington movies behind it, it could turn into a surprise hit.

In the are of not remotely interesting to me is Disney’s live action version of The Little Mermaid. I’ve never seen the original animation and so was never going to be interested in this, but let’s face it most of these remakes have been bad and I don’t expect this to be any different.

9/10 of these movies have anthropomorphic animals in.

Animated

Animation had a few successes in 2022 but also the two biggest box office bombs. This year looks a bit more promising with at least two guaranteed hits and a few interesting originals. The two obvious hits are the sequel to Sony’s well received Spider-Verse movie “Spider-Man across the Spider-Verse” and the heavily anticipated “The Super Mario Bros. Movie“. These are likely to be the Sonic 2 and Minions 2 of this year, but that doesn’t mean either will be good. I have mixed feelings on both, but I’d say I was overall cautiously optimistic. I’m not a Nintendo fan especially, the only console of theirs I ever owned was the N64, but I know there are a LOT of fans out there looking forward to this.

The War of the Rohirrim

A surprise franchise return for 2023 is “Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget“. While the original was a good fun film, it came out in 2000 and so it’s hard to say how well a sequel nearly a quarter of a century later will do, especially with an entirely new set of voice actors (Which is quite baffling). Another surprise this year is “The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim“, this anime style story is from Warner Brothers and is being directed by anime legend Kenji Kamiyama. It is heavily influenced by the movie series. This will likely be pretty good so keep an eye out for it in April.

While a lot of Disney’s output this year is on the cringe side, they may surprise people with an animated feature this year as they have chose with “Wish” to return to hand drawn animation, something they’ve not done since Princess and the Frog in 2009. The movie may well still be bad, but it will at least look good. Disney’s Pixar meanwhile are sticking to their familiar style with their new movie “Elemental” which sounds like a fairly generic kids story about getting on with people different to you. “Trolls 3” is due out next year too, I’ve never watched any of the others so am totally indifferent to that.

Yes apparently according to AI al you need for a comedy film is a moustache!

Comedy

I’m not particularly looking forward to any comedy movie in 2023, however that’s fairly normal for the genre. It’s not so much the situation as it is the execution that makes a great comedy and the best ones are often the least expected. So who knows which of these may turn out to be a classic. However, by far the highest profile comedy due out in 2023 has to be the “Barbie” movie. Not a movie that would normally appeal to me, but the teaser trailer was actually pretty damn funny and Margot Robbie is actually pretty good at comedy. It’s worth noting the teaser showed almost none of the actual movie, so it could go either way still.

80’s for Brady.

That’s not Margot Robbie’s only comedy this year either as she’s joining an all star cast including Tom Hanks, Ed Norton and Scarlet Johansen for Wes Anderson’s new movie “Asteroid City“. Like most of Anderson’s movie it will no doubt be highly divisive, massively praised by some and be greeted with confusion by others. Personally I find him quite hit and miss, but I will no doubt check it out. More likely to just be trash however is Disney’s new theme park adaptation “Haunted Mansion“, however it’s worth remembering that was where Pirates of the Caribbean started too and it does have an all star cast. We’ll see I guess.

I’ve not watched any of the Magic Mike movies, so I have no feelings on his “Last Dance” at all. But if you are in to those films, there is a new one (And presumably last one by that title). There’s also a remake of the 1990’s comedy “House Party” because of course there’s a random remake here too. This year also brings a trio of romantic comedies “Maybe I do“, “Your Place or Mine” and “You People” all of which I’ll skip (Not into RomComs, sorry) and a trio of sports related comedies “Champions”, “80’s For Brady” and Taiko Waititi’s “Next Goal Wins“, all of which actually look quite funny. Last but not least Tom Hanks returns to comedy for “A Man Called Otto” which will probably be out by the time you read this.

A coming of age drama about overcoming disability set against a backdrop of violence and poverty.

Drama

Last but not least are the more serious movies of the year, some of which may even find themselves up for an Oscar nomination (Not that the Oscars mean anything anymore). Even this category isn’t free from remakes though with Spielberg’s “The Colour Purple” randomly getting the treatment. I think that is the first Spielberg movie to be remade but it was only ever a matter of time. We also have a tired old franchise that refuses to die in the third movie from Rocky spin off Creed. We also see Kenneth Branagh stubbornly return with another Poirot movie, this time “A Haunting in Venice”.

Want to see nuclear tests recreated with practical effects? Nolan is your man.

A very old franchise sees a return this year as hard boiled detective Philip Marlowe is actually going to be hitting a new case with the movie “Marlowe“. This isn’t based on a Raymond Chandler book though, but a newer one written by John Banville. I’ve read all the Chandler books and until I heard about this movie I didn’t know anyone else had picked up the mantle, so I’m not sure what to expect. The movie stars Liam Neeson as the titular detective.

The most notable drama coming in 2023 would have to be Christopher Nolan’s new movie, the biopic “Oppenheimer“. The movie features the recreation of an atomic bomb blast done with PRACTICAL EFFECTS. Please let that sink in for a moment before moving on. Nolan didn’t actually set of a nuke but I think he did create the largest explosion ever done explicitly for the purpose of making a movie.

Just how much does Willem Dafoe have to do to win a damn Oscar?

Another one to look for this year is the Willem Dafoe movie “Inside” about an art thief that accidentally gets locked inside a penthouse apartment with nothing for company but priceless works of art. I think that is destined to be a good one and you never know maybe even get Dafoe a long overdue Oscar. Other dramas this year includes the Zach Braff directed “A Good Person” staring Florence Pugh support from Morgan Freeman; Hippy Awakening movie “Jesus Revolution“; The biopic for record producer Neil Bogart “Spinning Gold“; and missing person thriller “Missing“. Also (and I almost missed this, showing it’s poor publicity) Scorsese’s new movie “Killers of the Flower Moon” with DiCaprio staring, which joins Apples slate of original movies for 2023.

Release Dates

Remember these films are only the higher profile ones. Some of my favourites from last year were indie movies that wouldn’t have had any hype this time last year. Often the best things come out of nowhere and I look forward to being pleasantly surprised. This also doesn’t include any foreign language movies and most years my top ten includes at least one non-English movie. In 2022 it was an obscure Finnish body horror. So this is far from the full picture. However, given the size of this article I hope you’ll forgive me not digging in any deeper!

I’m going to finish with a quick month by month of the upcoming movies (Note, some of the films don’t have set release dates yet so aren’t included). I’ve put the movies I’m looking forward to in bold, but tell me what you are looking forward to in the comments.

Halloween And What Comes Next!

I hope those of you that came by over October for my review challenge enjoyed my reviews and maybe found some films to check out (or avoid). As the month went on I found myself writing more and more and while I really needed a break by the end it’s been a strange few days not writing anything. Fun fact, I did the review challenge last year too, I just didn’t have the blog then so it was straight to Facebook and Minds. But I got such a positive reaction and enjoyed it so much it is the reason I started the blog. A few of those reviews have been retrospectively added to the site, but not all as the Facebook reviews were far shorter and only had the one picture.

My Halloween Viewing.

Much like I did last year, the movie I reviewed on Halloween I actually watched the day before and on Halloween itself I treated myself to a triple bill. Last year it was Nightmare on Elm Street 3, Friday the 13th part 6 and Halloween II. Three of the best Slasher sequels you will come across. This year though I went in a different direction. Not sure there really is a theme outside of just being great horror movies (and short enough to make a good triple bill). While I’m not doing reviews I am going to say a little about each one.

Return Of The Living Dead (1985)

The Return of the Living Dead, is the ground breaking “Zomedy” written and directed by the great Dan O’Bannon (Writer of Alien, Dark Star and the comic book that greatly inspired Blade Runner, see part 2 of my Blade Runner Deep Dive on that one). At some point I may have to do a deep dive just on Dan, simply because he just doesn’t get enough credit for his creative input to a number of classics.

Return was one of only three movies he directed, with the rest of his credits being writing, but he did a good job here. The movie was the first to my knowledge that had zombies that that you couldn’t kill by destroying the brain or removing the head. Every part of their body was animated and they didn’t lose their intelligence either. A few months later Re-Animator also used this kind of Zombie (and was also great). It may also have been the first zombie horror comedy.

Prince of Darkness (1987)

Prince of Darkness is part of the great run of films John Carpenter put together in the 80’s and forms part of what is known as his Apocalypse trilogy (Which spans until the 90’s), which includes “The Thing” and “In The Mouth of Madness”. Amongst Carpenter’s output (and especially amongst the 80’s movies) this isn’t likely many peoples favourite, but it’s still a quality movie and 100% classic John Carpenter.

The cast includes several actors from other Carpenter films such as Victor Wong and Dennis Dun (from the previous years “Big Trouble in Little China”) and Carpenter regulars Donald Pleasence and Peter Jason (Who would go on to appear in five more Carpenter movies). It also has a kick ass soundtrack, a random celebrity known for something other than acting (In this case Alice Cooper) and melancholy, claustrophobic theme involving dark secret truths and has a great ending. You know, this may be 110% classic Carpenter.

Event Horizon (1997)

The final movie of my triple bill was Event Horizon. This was panned by critics on release but turned out to be a cult classic and it is in my opinion is a top five horror movie for the 1990’s (or is at least in the conversation). The movie takes the feel of Aliens and slaps on a heavy shade of Hellraiser.

But the funny thing is it could also be in the same universe as the Doom video game seeing as they somewhat share a premise. In the game experiments in teleportation accidentally connect our realm to hell, in Event Horizon an experimental faster than light drive effectively teleports the ship to hell and back, bringing with it an influence of evil.

It fits quite well with the premise of Prince of Darkness, which suggested the evil we know as the devil is actually alien in origin. The other John Carpenter link here is Sam Neil who also featured in “In The Mouth of Madness” (Another one if the conversation for that top 5 spot) and Neil was really on form in the 90’s. Here he proved how good he can be as the antagonist.

Noirvember

When I first started my blog and right after my run of October reviews in 2021, I did something I called “Noirvember”. Since one of my movie passions is Film Noir and there aren’t a lot of websites out there that review both horrors and Film Noir I decided to take some of my momentum from October and channel it into doing a few thematic reviews through November.

I am absolutely going to do that again. Unlike October this isn’t a review a day job. My aim is to do at least four over November (one per week), but after taking a little break out at the start to recover from the Horror season I may well up that. I think I did about six last year, so expect something similar.

If you aren’t a fan of Noir or don’t really know what it is, perhaps this may encourage you to give these old movies a chance. In many ways they have a lot in common with horror between the lighting techniques and the fatalism of the characters. It’s one of the reasons why I find it a good transition back into general movie watching.

Further Down The Road

After November, I may introduce a few more non-review items on the site. I’m unlikely to do another deep dive of the size of the three part Blade Runner one, but not many films are as complicated a thing to get into as that movie. I do want to do more articles on some of my favourites though. Probably the next one will be on The Terminator, but we’ll see. I may do that Dan O’Bannon article too.

I’m also toying with an idea I’m calling “Movie Pitch” where I look at how I would have done something that didn’t work out so well in real life. For example, how I would revive the Terminator franchise (and yes it can be a franchise), how I would have done Universal’s Dark Universe, how I would reboot the Highlander franchise, what I would do to fix Halloween, that kind of thing. These days there are so many franchise down the toilet that I’ll never run out of things to “fix”. But the idea actually came from a Terminator story idea I had. Maybe it’s good, maybe it’s bad. That’s for you to decide.

On top of that, as the new year comes around I will do a year in review again (Maybe not a three part one this time) and of course I may watch and review some new releases.
